Following a successful pilot across 50 practices and all three clinical systems, NHS England Improvement (London Region) and the London Bowel Screening Hub, in collaboration with iPLATO, introduced bowel screening text reminders as of the end of April 2022. Text reminders will be sent to individuals who do not return the FIT screening test kit after six weeks. Mobile phone numbers will be extracted from the NHS Patient Demographic Service database (PDS/Spine).
Thank you to all practices that have responded to the request to endorse the bowel screening programme. To date, 52 per cent of practices (637/1222) across London have agreed to endorse the NHS Bowel Screening Programme via text and letter. There is strong evidence that primary care endorsement of cancer screening can increase uptake by 2-3 per cent and is more effective in groups with lower uptake.
The GP endorsed text reminder will be worded as follows:
Your bowel screening test is due. recommends screening to patients of your age. Please call 0800 707 6060 for further information. If you recently returned a kit, please ignore this message. Info at https://nhs.uk/bowel. Privacy notice at: mygp.me/CS-privacy
The GP-endorsed letter will have the following banner:
Your GP Practice support the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme
Practices are encouraged to opt into their practice name being included in the text messages and letters by emailing iPLATO.
