Breast Screening Update: Self-referrals for Women Over 71
During the restoration of services following the initial coronavirus outbreak, NHS breast screening services temporarily paused taking self-referrals from women aged 71 and over.
Following a planned review of this decision, NHS England has now asked that the screening of self-referrers is resumed immediately.
Services will provide appointments to self-referring women in line with previous technical guidance. To ensure that this is as equitable as possible, where services are running open appointments, self-referrers will be given any available short-notice appointments that have not been filled by the eligible cohort (50 to 70-year-olds). Otherwise, services will revert to pre-Covid-19 business as usual practices when booking self-referrers, and it will be made clear to them, that the service is unable to automatically provide an appointment time and date, and that they will receive an invite in due course.
