Congratulations to West Green and Hornsey Wood Green surgeries for winning the 2021 Health Service Journal (HSJ) award in the Public and Preventative Health Service Redesign initiative category.
The practices were awarded for their innovative booking system to increase uptake in cervical screening. Having found that both surgeries had lower cervical smear uptake rates than the average in Haringey and London, the bespoke software was created to help increase appointment bookings. The system sends automated emails, including links to videos and translated material reminding patients to book a smear appointment when due.
As a result of this initiative both practices have seen a significant increase in the number of cervical screening appointments (5 - 11%) with increased uptake by 241 cervical smears in 2020/21. These figures are even more impressive when considering that this improved uptake has occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic. There was a particular increase in younger cohorts who were historically less likely to do smear test or more prone to DNA their appointment.
Dr Nazmul Akunjee, GP Principal at West Green Surgery, said: ‘Huge thanks to the team across both surgeries for their efforts in achieving this accolade.’
West Green and Hornsey Wood Green surgeries were also highly commended for this initiative by the HSJ under the Cancer care initiative of the year category.
