The Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM) Insomnia Service has decided to temporarily restrict referrals to enable the safe management of existing referrals. This is because the demand for the service has increased beyond capacity.
A full-time specialty doctor will be starting soon and University College London Hospital (UCLH) hopes the addition of another doctor to the service will help it to reopen as soon as possible.
The trust says that the decision to restrict referrals was not an easy one. Waiting times for the service have escalated to an extent whereby the clinic cannot currently provide an optimal service for existing patients when taking on new referrals.
RLHIM expects that the pause will allow it to improve waiting times and create capacity for the safe management of new referrals in the future whilst looking to build in extra resources to the existing service to improve future capacity.
The decision will be reviewed in January 2022.
