Service Update: Musculoskeletal (MSK) Services
During this challenging time we would like to continue to work collaboratively to ensure that patients are seen by the correct service, so please continue to use the MSK Single Point of Access (SPOA) pathway (in ERS) to ensure patients are seen in the right place, first time.
Please do not book directly into Orthopaedics, Pain and Rheumatology Consultant Clinics via ERS. Our secondary care colleagues are re-directing referrals that are more appropriate for community MSK and this is delaying the patient journey.
Waiting times for the Community Specialist MSK Service (MSK CATS) are currently better than for our secondary care colleagues so by using the MSK SPOA you will be helping ensure your patient is seen as soon possible: 90 per cent are seen within six weeks
In MSK Services we have been working hard over the past four months to contact all patients who were put on hold during this time, and have asked them to contact us to book an appointment. All of these patients have been now been contacted and those who have not responded have been left with a four-month open appointment. We are keen to rebook these patients against their original referral in order to minimise the need for re-referral into the MSK service and reduce the need GPs re-referral. If your patient has advised otherwise, please encourage them to contact our service and we will be happy to rebook.

In order to keep patients and staff safe we are using a “talk before you walk” principle during this difficult time, and therefore offering virtual consultations (telephone or video appointment with an MSK clinician) as the first appointment. If the clinician and patient feel that a face-to-face (mask-to-mask) appointment is needed, we will book one appointment after completing a risk assessment.
Patients are sometimes unsure how much physiotherapy can be done via video, please share this brilliant video on the benefit of a virtual consultation in MSK with them to help encourage them to call and book their appointment:
