Better Lives: Drug and Alcohol Service

Better Lives offers free and confidential support for Islington residents affected by drug or alcohol problems, as well as their families and carers. 

The specialist team includes substance misuse practitioners, doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists and pharmacists, as well as complementary therapists, volunteers and peer mentors who provide advice, assessment and treatment for drug and/or alcohol problems.

  • BBV testing and treatment
  • Treatment in GP surgeries
  • Assessment and access to residential detoxification and rehabilitation
  • Debt and housing advice
  • Specialist women’s groups and support
  • Psychological therapy, counselling and group work
  • Self-help and mutual aid groups
  • Peer support
  • A health and wellbeing service for people using club drugs
  • Re-integration and aftercare; education, training and employment support

Eligibility criteria


  • Islington residents aged 18+
  • their families and carers

How to refer

The following clinicians can refer to this service: GPs, Nurses, Any professional or support worker can make a referral on someone’s behalf (with the consent of the person being referred).


People can have an assessment on the day by attending open-access drop-in sessions:

Better Lives at 99-101 Seven Sisters Road, London N7 7QP

Tuesday: 2pm-4.30pm

Wednesday: 10.30am-1pm; 2pm-4.30pm

Thursday : 2pm-4.30pm

Friday: 10.30am-1pm; 2pm-4.30pm

Better Lives at 309 Gray’s Inn Rd, London WC1X 8QS

Monday to Friday: 9.30am-11.30am

If these times are not convenient, people can self-refer by phone or email and a convenient assessment time will be arranged.  

Sessions are also available from a number of satellite locations and GP surgeries across the borough. For more information please contact the service.



Seven Sisters Road

Opening hours: Monday 9.15am-8pm, Tuesday 1pm-5pm, Wednesday 9.15am-5pm, Thursday 1pm-5pm, Friday 9.15am-6pm (between 5pm-6pm is not open access)

Gray’s Inn Road

Opening hours: Monday 9am-5pm, Tuesday 9am-5pm, Wednesday 9am-8pm, Thursday 9am-5pm (closed between 2pm-4pm), Friday 9am-5pm

King Henry’s Walk

Opening hours: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. There is late-night access to this site for planned events on Wednesday and Fridays, for more information on this please contact the site
