The orthopaedic team in the virtual fracture clinic reviews cases following attendance at the emergency department or urgent care centre. Patients do not need to attend the hospital for the assessment to take place.
Clinicians will look at X-rays and medical notes, and an orthopaedic physiotherapist or nurse will telephone patients to discuss treatment and management. Following the phone call, patients may be discharged by phone or referred to the most appropriate outpatient clinic to meet their needs. Patients and their GPs will receive a letter outlining the assessment and outcome.

Referral methods: e-Referrals
Fracture clinic appointments are made by referral from accident and emergency departments or urgent care centres. For wider orthopaedic services, electronic referrals from a GP may be made through the e-Referrals service. Referrals are welcome by a letter from GPs to the orthopaedic consultants.
