Gender identity development service (GIDS)
The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) is for children and young people, and their families, who experience difficulties in the development of their gender identity. It's a national specialised service, based in London and Leeds, and is the only one of its kind in Great Britain.
Gender Reassignment Surgery
The EBICS Policy states that:
This procedure is not routinely funded by NCL CCGs. For this treatment to be considered patients must be on a recognised programme of care and the NCL CCG should check the specialised commissioning arrangements in their area. Note: Patients should be referred to a recognised NHS programme of care for management of these cases. Treatment is covered by specialised commissioning arrangements. Any treatments not covered by specialised commissioning arrangements are to be considered under the relevant section of the aesthetic surgery guidelines, e.g. breast augmentation and hair removal.
West London Mental Health Trust run an adult gender identify clinic from Charing Cross. Waiting lists are reported as being 12 months, but the service might be able to offer advice on alternatives, such as peer support, during a waiting period.
Please be aware that from April 2017, the adult gender identify clinic will transfer from Charing Cross to Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. For more information, including allocated funding for gender identity services, please visit the NHS England website.
